Sao Miguel - West island car tour

After Vista do Rei we got hit by a great painful muscle fever that prevented us from walking straight 😆 So we decided to go on a car tour and see the rest of the beauties from the West side of the island. The first stop was at Miraduro do Pico do Carvao where we admired the bright green fields which stretched to the Atlantic Ocean.

In this area, along the road, we noticed many old towers and aqueducts and stopped at some of them to take pictures and walk among them. This tower can be found on Maps as "Torre". We also stopped at Aqueducto do Carvao which can be found between Muro das Nove Janelas and a parking lot where we left the car.

On our way to Sete Cidades village, we stopped at another beautiful viewpoint - Miraduro do Cerrado das Freias - to admire again the mesmerizing landscape of the crater's lagoons. In Sete Cidades we enjoyed a cup of coffee at a nice local and a well deserved icecream by the Blue Lagoon or Lagoa Azul. We took a small walk inside the village and stopped for a moment do admire Sao Nicolau church.

We had a small stop at Miraduro do Esclavado before we headed to Mosteiros Beach. This is one of the most popular and beautiful beaches from Sao Miguel island. The scenic landscape combining the black sand beach with the white foam of the ocean waves crushing into the lava rock formations is absolutely gorgeous. There is also a river that fights with the waves of the ocean to flow into it. From what I read on the internet, this is also a great spot to catch the sunset. Unfortunately, we did not catch it because the sunset was very late, somewhere around past 9PM.

After we took a little walk barefoot on the beach shore, and before we headed back to the hotel, we made a last stop to Red Peak Mill. This is a very beautiful and well preserved wind mill that was build in Dutch-style between 18th and 19th centuty.
