Tenerife - Chinyero Volcano & Montana Negra
Montana Negra - Chinyero - is a moderate hike which I personally rate 11/10. It gives you a unique experience to walk so close to a volcano 🌋 and the best part is that you get to walk right on the cooled lava.
Volcano Chinyero is to blame for the disaster it created in 1909 by its erruption but also for the beautiful relief it created later. All the trees have their trunks black due to carbonization as effect of burning 🔥, giving a very dramatic look of the forest.
In the sea of petrified lava you can see here to there how the beautiful living nature will eventually win over any destruction. It is overwhelming how a disaster can create such beauty. While this 12,5km walk, I found myself meditating and feeling so full of hope for this wonderful world 😌. I was so grateful to live on this Planet 🙏and for everything it offers us and felt overwhelmed with lust to see all of its wonders. I’m not gonna lie, I had a really spiritual time in this trip, something that I am not used to and I did not plan to do, it all came naturally to me.
Coming back to the hike, it is a 12,5km walk that we completed in 4
hours with many long stops for pictures and videos. The walk can be shortened
because it crosses other paths. The first path circles Montana Negra and the
second one circles Chinyero volcano. Being so close to each other we did both
of them. About 50% of the road is shadowed by coniferous forest. No special
boots are required, but if you plan to do it in full sun, please make sure you
have a hat, sunscreen and enough water for the whole circuit. We did it in the
afternoon, started at 5:30PM and finished it at 9:30PM when it was already dark
in the forest. We hate to walk in the sun so we assumed this risk. We parked 🚙 in
a camping area that can be found as “Zona de Acampada Arenas Negras” or simply
search for “Parking Arenas Negras”.
As previously mentioned, the trail can circle both Montana Negra and Chinyero:
We shortened our walk because it got late and dark and did it like this:
