Lisbon day 1 - A day of history
We landed at the airport in Lisbon, settled at our hotel, changed clothes and we went on an adventure. The first destination in today's plan was Miraduro da Senhora do Monte. From here you will have a view over the city, mostly of the area called Santa Cruz. The landscape of the houses with red roofs is accompanied by all sorts of talented people who sing at different instruments or voice, giving you a good vibe 🎵. While we were walking on the small streets, we even met a man who was playing guitar and vocals from the balcony of his house. We found it absolutely fantastic and gave us the impression that the people here feel very free and can express themselves exactly as they feel, without borders.
The next stop was at Castelo de Sao Jorge, a castle that left us speechless. The fortification rises on the highest hill in the historic center of the city and dates from the 6th century. Despite its age, the castle is in an absolutely fascinating state. The architecture of the entire fortress has been very well preserved over time; personally I have never seen such a whole and so old fortification. It also offers dreamy views of Lisbon and the Tagus River. Bonus, if you want to walk among the free peacocks, here is the right place for it! 😍 The entrance ticket costed 10 €.
Our walk then took us to Praca do Comercio or the Trade Square. A large square that is surrounded by many Ministries, of Justice, National Marine Defense and Internal Affairs, and in front by the Tagus River. Here is also the largest and most important Tuk-Tuk station. The tours are a bit expensive, starting at 60 euros and vary depending on the destination. More details about prices and tours can be found on the official website. Unfortunately we did not took this experience, but we will definitely do it on a future visit.
Since you're still in the area and if you are curious what a metro / transit boat station looks like, you can also make a stop at Terreiro do Praco.
After all this, our feet carried us randomly through the Portuguese streets until dusk when we reached Fonte Luminosa. It was perfect to see these fountains in the evening because then you can best admire the beauty of their lighting.
That's all for the first day, fellow travelers. See you on day 2 that promises to be fuller.
